Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru Treks
Wildlife Safaris & Tribal/Cultural Tours
Pristine Beaches & Swahili Culture
Short trips from Moshi/Arusha
Mt Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain that can be climbed without technical skills or special equipment. It is termed a 'walk up mountian'. Does that mean that it is easy? NO! Far from it. Does that mean that it has no danger? NO! Kilimanjaro can be deadly but with a skilled, well trained guide it can be conquered by many people, even you. In fact the guide is so important that the park will not allow climbs without a certified guide. What it takes is determination and a bit of luck how your body reacts to the altitude. And indeed it does help to be well prepared physically, mentally and with the right gear. The biggest obstacle is the altitude. At the summit, the available oxygen is only half that as at sea level. Listen to your guides instructions and be transparent with him about how your body is handling the conditions and you will have a good chance of success.
In the span of a few days you will trek through several different climate zones. Both Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru treks require the same packing list but the quantitiy of some items can be reduced for Mt Meru. The weather is quite unpredictable so there is a delicate balance between being prepared for anything and packing lightly. Each porter can carry 15kg of equipment. If you take extra items more porters may be required. As long as you follow the reccomended list given below you will be ok. Before your trek there will be an equipment check to insure that your equipment is adaquate. All items required are available for rent locally.

some of your water is in a bottle. The park will not allow disposable bottles on the mountain.
1 - Water Bladder (Camelbak type, 3 liters)--or carry 3L in water bottles as an alternative
1 - Towel, lightweight, quick-dry (optional)
1 - Pee Bottle, to avoid leaving tent at night (recommended - not as important if you have a private toilet tent)

Lip Balm -- important to have UV protection
Insect Repellent, containing DEET -- not in pressurized can. This is only needed at lower altitudes
First Aid Kit -- your guide will have a first aid kit also but some basic items for blisters, upset stomach/nausea/diarrhea and headache
is a good idea
Hand Sanitizer
Toilet Paper
Wet Wipes (optional but recommended)
Dry wipes (optional)
Snacks, light-weight, high calorie, high energy (optional but can be a big help on summit day) -- these are not available locally
Electrolytes, powder or tablets (optional)

There are several route choice and each one has options regarding the duration. Adding an acclimatization day helps immensely in achieving your goal. The shortest standard itinerary is 5 days but that is not recommended and has the lowest success rate. The longest standard itinerary is 9 days. 6 - 8 days are the most common. Marangu Route is different than the others in that it has overnights in dormitory style huts with solar power. All other routes are camping routes.
Machame is a very popular itinerary. It is a well designed route allowing for some days to trek higher then descend slightly to reach the overnight camp. This allows better altitude acclimatization. This route combines with Lemosho Route a few days into the trek so during high season (June - September) it can have many other groups on thr route. This can be done as either a 6 days or 7 days trek. The longer version adds an acclimatization day explained below.
Day 0 - Arrival/Preparation day
We will pick you up at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) and drive you to your hotel in Moshi. This day we will go through and equipment check
and a pre-climb briefing where all details will be given and any questions will be answered. If you will need additional equipment, we will take you
to an equipment rental shop where every item needed for a climb can be rented. Your hotel for this night in included in your climb package (B & B plan).
Note: If you have an arrival late in the day, the equipment check and briefing will be done early the next morning.
Day 1
Your driver and guide will pick you up in Moshi at 0800 and drive to the Machame Gate. After registration and clearances at the base,
begin your trek through a spectacular forest area, reaching Machame Camp after 6 or 7 hours (including a picnic lunch). There you
will have dinner and overnight (2,700M- 8,856 Ft)
Day 2
After a short descent, you will begin your trek towards Shira Cathedral. Continuing on, you will pass by a superb bivi cave, just before
arriving at Shira Camp, at 3,700 meters (about 12,136 Ft), where you will have dinner and overnight. Today’s climb is about 5-6 hours.
Day 3
Trek from Shira Camp to Baranco Camp. You will have dinner and overnight at Baranco Camp. Baranco is 3,950 M, about 12,950 Ft)
Day 4(for 6 days trek)
Trek from Baranco Camp to Barafu Hut (4,550 M, about 14,920Ft). The day starts will the scaling of the steep Barranco Wall which looks more difficult
than it is. We continue to Barafu Camp where you will overnight before your ascent to Uhuru Peak. (5,896 M, about 19,340 Ft)
Day 4(for 7 days itinerary)
This day is an acclimatization day. There is a net altitude gain of only 90m. We take you on a trek from Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley Camp,
a 5 km trek. You will start by scaling the steep Barranco Wall before trekking up and down several ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga
Valley Camp.
Day 5 (for 7 days itinerary)
A trek up and down some ridges in a 3 - 4 hour trek. You will need an early dinner and sleep since you will need to wake up around midnight.
Day 5/6
Shortly after midnight, arise and begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Today is the tough one, 6 -7 hours to reach the summit then
6- 9 hours descending. The trek to the summit will be a very slow pace since the low oxygen in the atmosphere at this altitude makes the
body exhausted easily. The weather can be quite cold and windy so you will need all your warm layers of clothing. At the summit you will have
some minutes for photos and to take in the reality of achieving your goal. But you won't want to spend too long or your body will relax too mcuh.
You will then begin your descent to Mweka Hut,
3,100 M, about 10,170 Ft), where you will have dinner and overnight.
Day 6/7
After completing your descent to Mweka Gate, you will receive your Summit Certificate and transfer back to your hotel. Congratulations!
Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest, most well established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations. This is the shortest route on the mountain so there is not as much opportunity for your body to acclimatize to the altitude. The minimum days required for this route is five, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time period is lower compated to longer itineraries. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended when climbing Klimanjaro using the Marangu route.
Day 1
Marangu Gate (1700m) – Mandara Hut 2740m – (5,500ft to 9,000ft)
After breakfast at your hotel, we pick you up and drive you to Marangu village and proceed to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (45 minutes), register at
Kilimanjaro National Park Authority offices and commence the climb. Walk through the rainforest to the Mandara Hut located at 9,000 ft / 2,740 m.
Day 2
Mandara Hut (2,740m) – Horombo Hut (3700m) – (9,000ft to 12,100ft)
In the morning after breakfast we start trekking to Horombo Hut. After about 1 hour, you will leave the glades of the
rainforest and follow an ascending path on the open moorlands to the Horombo Hut. The view of Kibo summit and Mawenzi are both stunning
and shinning in clear days. In most cases giant lobelias and grounsels are found on your way. Horombo Hut is a point where most of the
climbers acclimate.
Day 3
Horombo Hut (3700m) – Kibo Hut (4700m) – (12,100ft to 15,400ft)
In the morning after breakfast the trek will take us to the last watering point, walking onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between the peaks
of Kibo and Mawenzi. Vegetation begins with upper heartland but then disappears into desert like structure. At Kibo you will have your
dinner, and try to sleep early since you will need to wake up around midnight.
Day 4
Kibo Hut (4,750m/15,580ft) to Summit (5,895m/19,340ft) to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft)
Around midnight, awake for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. The hike begins with a demanding five hour hike to
Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. Although this is considered to be the easiest of the three crater ascent paths, it is still
extremely difficult. The first major rest stop, William’s Point, lies at 5000 meters and is approximately a two hour hike Kibo Hut.
Continue on for thirty minutes before beginning the rocky switchbacks that will continue to Gillman’s Point (5,681 meters).
The hike from Gilman’s to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however,
makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately two hours. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your
guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Horombo Hut. Reach Horombo Hut in the afternoon and enjoy your
last night on the mountain.
Day 5
Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft) to Marangu Gate (1,800m/5,905ft)
After breakfast, finish the trek with a descent to Marangu Gate. Your last hike on Kilimanjaro is a beautiful one, passing
through Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest. Watch your step during the descent, as the trail can be slippery. Our vehicles will be
waiting at Marangu Gate to take you back to Moshi.
**We suggest planning to take a 6th day, whereas (as mentioned before) Day 3 is used as a acclimatization day.
The Lemosho Route offers a more private Kilimanjaro experience than the other routes of Marangu and Machame. Although the trail joins with the more popular Machame route on day three, the first two days on the mountain are relatively private, with few other trekking groups around. On the first day, arrive at Londorosi Gate at about 11am. Once you arrive, you’ll spend about an hour waiting to get registered your climb and the porters and guides make final preparations. At around 12pm, you will begin hiking with your guides to Mti Mkubwa Camp. Hike through the rain forests of Kilimanjaro viewing trees and birds along the way. You will eat a packed lunch on the trail while enjoying the sounds of the forest.
Day 1

Enjoy the beautiful views of the mountain. (3,840M)
Day 4
Shira II Camp (3,840 M/12,532 ft.) to Barranco Camp (3,950 M/12,960 ft.)
Enjoy breakfast, and starting from Shira 2, trek about 6 hours to Barranco Camp (3,950 M) for dinner and overnight.
Day 5
Barranco Camp (3,950 M/12,960 ft.) to Barufu Camp (4,600 M/15,091 ft.)
Today you will trek from Barranco to Barafu Camp. You will have dinner and overnight at Barafu (4,550 M).
Day 6
Barufu (4,600M/15,091 ft.) to Summit (5,895 M/19,340 ft.), Summit to Mweka (3,100M/10,170 ft.)
You will rise shortly after midnight to begin your final ascent to the top of Kilimanjaro. You should reach the summit by sunrise
after about 4 hours and then descend to Mweka Camp 3,100 M (4 hours) for dinner and overnight. Enjoy your last night on the
mountain in celebration.
Day 7
Mweka Camp (3,100 M/10,170 ft.) to Mweka Gate (1,500 M/4,920 ft.)
Today it will be about 3-4 hours to reach the Mweka Gate where you receive your Summit Certificate and drive back to Arusha
and your hotel. Congratulations!
**When done in 8 days, this route uses Day 5 to trek from Barranco to Karanga Valley (4,100 M). Then the climb returns to the regular schedule on Day 6, where you trek from Karanga to Barafu. (Base to Forest Camp, Forest Camp to Shira 1, Shira 1 to Shira 2, Shira 2 to Barranco, Barranco to Karanga, Karanga to Barufu, Barufu to summit to Mweka, and Mweka to base.)
**When done in 9 days, this route uses the Mti Mkubwa Camp for the first overnight. In addition, on Day 5, your trek is from Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley (4,100 M). Finally, on Day 7, you will trek from Barafu Camp to Crater Camp (5,715 M) for overnight, then Crater Camp to the summit (5,895 M) on Day 8. (Base to Mti Mkubwa, Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1, Shira 1 to Shira 2, Shira 2 to Barranco, Barranco to Karanga, Karanga to Barufu, Barufu to Crater Camp, Crater Camp to Summit to Mweka, Mweka to base.)
Rongai ascends via the less forested northern side of the mountain. Rongai Route is one of the least crowded routes on Kilimanjaro because of the long drive to the gate. The Rongai trail is thought to have the best chance of viewing wildlife.
Day 1
Rongai Gate (1,800 M/5,900 ft.) to First Cave Camp (2,600M /8,400 ft.)
After an early breakfast in Moshi, drive to the Rongai Gate near the Kenya border. After registering at the gate,
begin your climb to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. During the first day, hike through forests where you may see and hear wildlife.
Eat lunch on the trail before continuing to the first campsite, First Cave Camp, for dinner and overnight.
Day 2
First Cave Camp (2,600 M/8,400 ft.) to Kikelewa Camp (3,600 M/11,810 ft.)
During day two hike through Kilimanjaro’s moorland. The Rongai route is relatively short and steep, making for shorter hiking times.
During this day, view Mawenzi Peak ahead.
Day 3
Kikelewa Camp (3,600 M/11,810 ft.) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 M/14,200 ft.)
This day is an acclimatization day, allowing you to hike in the beginning of the day and rest in the afternoon and evening.
The hike is relatively short but steep. The Mawenzi Tarn campsite is situated below Mawenzi Peak and offers stunning views
of both Mawenzi and Kibo.
Day 4 (this day is omitted for the 6 days itinerary)
Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Day four is an acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn. We advise hiking a bit higher this day before returning to Mawenzi Tarn in the afternoon.
Day 5
Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 M/14,200 ft.) to Kibo Camp (4,750 M/15,580 ft.)
Cross the lunar landscape of the saddle on this day to arrive at the final campsite. Kibo Camp is situated directly below the Kibo cone,
giving you views of your final destination.
Day 6
Kibo Camp (4,750 M/15,580 ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 M/19,340 ft.) to Horombo Hut (3,720 M/12,200 ft.)
Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. For the next six hours,
hike by the light of your flashlight. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek.
The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Gilman’s Point.
The hike from Gilman’s to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude,
however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately two hours. Upon reaching Uhuru,
take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Horombo Hut.
Day 7
Horombo Hut (3,720 M/12,200 ft.) to Marangu Gate (1,800 M/5,905 ft.)
After breakfast, finish the trek with a descent to Marangu Gate. Your last hike on Kilimanjaro is a beautiful one,
passing through Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest. Watch your step during the descent, as the trail can be slippery.
Our vehicles will be waiting at Marangu Gate to take you back to Moshi/Arusha. You will be able to buy t-shirts and sodas at the gate.
Day 1
Londorossi gate – Shira camp (3600m)
The day of walking that begins from Londorossi National Park gate (2,250 m.) through farmland and plantations, and continues climbing
steadily on a broad track through shrub forest and stands of giant heather to reach the rim of Shira Plateau (3,350 m.)
The views across the surrounding plains open out as we climb and the area is home to a variety of game including buffalo.
Our first camp is in the centre of the plateau at “Shira One” (3,550 m.) [3-4 hours walking]
Day 2
Shira two camp (3840m)
After breakfast continue hike east across the Shira Plateau past the Shira Cathedral towards Shira Two camp. We only gain
700 feet in elevation – this allows us to acclimatize slowly to the altitude. The views of the plateau are nothing less than
spectacular. Overnight at Shira two camp 3850m
Day 3
Barranco (3950m)
Today is the last of the “easy days”. It is about a 7-hour superb hike. We pass the Lava Tower, around the
southern flank of Kibo, and slowly descend into the spectacular Barranco Valley, interspersed with giant
lobelia and senecia plants. After arriving at our most spectacular campsite, everyone stands in awe at the
foot of Kibo Peak, looming high above, on our left. Our camp is only 465 feet higher than where we were last night,
but during the day, we will have climbed to just over 14,000 feet. This is one of our most valuable days for acclimatization.
Day 4
Karanga Valley (4000m)
On the eastern side of the valley, across the stream is the Barranco Wall – a 950 ft. barrier of volcanic rock.
Although it is tall and looks steep, it is very easy to climb. This is our first challenge of the day.
The views from the wall are nothing less than magnificent. The rest of the day is spent skirting the base of Kibo peak
over our left shoulder. We descend down into the Karanga Valley, where we rest up for the night before the tough climb up to Barafu Camp.
Day 5
Barafu (4600m)
First thing, you will be making a steep hike out of the valley. The air starts getting quite thin, and you will be running short
of breath. It is a tough, but rewarding uphill to the rocky, craggy slopes at the camp. Barafu means, ice in Swahili, and it is
extremely cold at this altitude. So, go to bed early because we will be waking you at midnight for the final leg to Uhuru Peak.
Day 6
Summit Uhuru peak (5895m) – Mweka camp (3100m)
We will start our ascent by torchlight around midnight so that we can be up on the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep
climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5,735 m.),
in about five or six hours. We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling
strong can make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.), passing close to the spectacular
glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some
refreshment, we continue to descend to reach our final campsite (3,800 m.) Millennium. Most of us will be too tired to notice
the beauty of the forest surrounding. We spend our last night on the mountain at Mweka Camp.
Day 7
Mweka Camp 3,100 m/10,170 ft. to Mweka Gate 1,980 m/6,500 ft. to Arusha (890 m/2,920 ft.) 15 km, 3 hours Forest
After a deserved strong breakfast it is a short scenic 3-hours hike back to the park gate. Please all tips to porters
and guides is given once all crew and the clients gears reached the Mweka gate safely, but remember to tip your staff
at the gate. At Mweka Gate, you can sign your name and add details in a register. This is also where successful climbers
receive their summit certificates. Climbers who reached Stella Point are issued green certificates and those who reached
Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates. From the Mweka Gate, you will continue down to the Mweka Village, possibly a muddy,
3 km, 1 hour hike if the road is too muddy for vehicles. In Mweka Village a delicious hot lunch will be served after which
you are driven back to Moshi for an overdue hot shower and comfortable night in a nice hotel in Moshi.
Meru is a great preparation hike for climbing Kilimanjaro, or a spectacular trek for those not compelled to do Kilimanjaro. You will hike past wildlife and on the summit, witness the towering Mt. Kilimanjaro on the horizon. While typically done in only 4 days, it is not an easy peak to summit. To reach the top, there is some scrambling on rocks in the dark and at high altitude. You should be prepared for at least 10 hours of hiking on summit day. For an easier hike, you can climb just to Rhino Point for sunrise, and then descend. The trek can be accomplshed in 3 days (summit and return to the park gate on day 3) but it is a tough and tiring option not recommended for the vast majority of trekkers.
Mt. Meru is inside of Arusha National Park. The park requires all groups to be accompanied by a park ranger. This ranger is employed directly by the national park. He will carry a rifle, which is available to scare away any advancing animals such as elephant or cape buffalo. The Park Authority reserved the rights to pair groups together to followone park ranger. This decision is entirely up to the park and not in our control. In any case, you will also have your own guide and climb staff to serve your group specifically. There is only one route on Mt Meru and overnights are in dormitory style mountain huts with solar lighting.
Day 0 - Arrival/Preparation day
This day we will go through and equipment check
and a pre-climb briefing where all details will be given and any questions will be answered. If you will need additional equipment, we will take you
to an equipment rental shop where every item needed for a climb can be rented.
Day 1
Momela Gate (1,500m/4,900 ft.) to Miriakamba Hut (2500m/8200 ft.)
Pick up from Moshi and pass through open grassland with cape buffalo and herds of warthogs. With luck, you might also see giraffe and elephants.
Continue a steady climb through the mountain forest and enjoy your lunch at the famous “Fig Tree”. Continue through less dense forest where
there are lots of birds and monkeys (including the black and white colobus.) By mid afternoon, you will see the first views of the towering
cliffs and the Ash Cone. Miriakampa Hut, situated in idyllic grassy glade, is reached in time to enjoy the afternoon sun and the views of
the plains.
Day 2
Miriakamba Hut (2,500m/8,200 ft.) to Saddle Hut (3,500m/11,700 ft.)
After breakfast, begin the walk from Miriakampa to the saddle below Little Meru, which is a steep, sustained climb. Starting through the
lush mountain forest, the path continues beyond the halfway point of Elephant Back Ridge and carries on uphill to Saddle Hut where you will
lunch. In the afternoon, make the short climb to the nearby summit of Little Meru (12,533 ft.) for superb views. Walk back down the Saddle
Hut for the evening.
Day 3
Saddle Hut (3,500m/11,700 ft.) to SUMMIT (4,566m/14,980 ft.) to Miriakamba Hut (2500/8200 ft.)
Summit day has an early start around 12:00 AM. There is an hour steep climb to Rhino Point (3800m/12,467 ft.) then the path continues along a
ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra Point (4350m/14,272 ft.) The summit of Socialist Peak (4566m) is an hour more on a steep path with
magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Depending on your speed, you can enjoy the sunrise at Cobra Point or the Summit.
The route back to Rhino Point in the sharp morning light along a narrow ridge between the sloping outer wall of the crater and
the sheer cliffs of the inner wall is one of the most dramatic and exhilarating walks in Africa. Brunch and a brief rest is taken at
Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to Miriakamba Hut.
NOTE: For an easier climb, you can start the trek at 05:00 A.M., hike for about 1 hour, and enjoy sunrise at Rhino Point before going back
to Saddle Hut for breakfast and then descending.
NOTE: In icy conditions or in strong winds, it may be impossible for anyone to progress beyond Rhino Point.
Day 4
Saddle Hut (2,500m/8,200 ft.) to (1,500m/4,900 ft.)
Two descent options exist. You can either descend the same way you ascended, or you can walk down the jeep road, which descends to the lower
crater floor. This route passes through the well known Fig Tree Arch and there, you can visit an impressive waterfall hidden in a ravine not
far from the road. The descent is quick, passing through grassland and mixed forests, with a good chance of seeing wildlife. The trail has
excellent views back towards the crater and over the plains of the National Park. Momela Gate is reached by late morning.
**Mt Meru trek is also available as a day trip excursion (non-summit trek).
Tanzania Safari Overview
Tanzania is perhaps the best safari destination in the world. The country takes preserving its natural resources
seriously, with over 30% of its area under protected status. The most popular portion of the country for tourists is
northern Tanzania. With both the famous Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater located in the north this is a major draw. Along
with the fact that Mt Kilimanjaro is also in the north so a Serengeti safari and Mt Kilimanjaro climb can be easily combined
in the same trip. There are some safari destinations that are great but overshadowed by their more famous neighbors. Tarangire,
Lake Manyara and Arusha national parks, although close together geographically, each park is unique and definitely worth a visit. Easy to add to a
wildlife safari are various cultural/tribal visits. Maasai and Hadzabe tribes along with cultural village tours and a visit to the famous Olduvai Gorge
can be included. We specialize in customized itineraries so we welcome a dialog with you to create the perfect itinerary for you. Overnights during
safaris can range from basic camping in tents under the African skies to luxurious five-star resorts and of course everything in between.
Your guide will be an expert of the local flora and fauna, having studied for years followed by further years of guiding experience before being selected as a Kashi Safaris Guide. If you choose a camping safari, you will have an excellent safari chef preparing fresh and remarkably high-quality meals.
We use only well-maintained Toyota Land Cruisers and Land Rovers all with custom safari viewing roofs. Every client is guaranteed a window seat for the best possible game viewing. Some destinations also allow walking safaris, accompanied by mandatory armed park rangers. Also available is the ultimate in a luxury safari experience - a hot air balloon safari followed by a picnic breakfast complete with sparkling wine. The possibilities are endless. Let Kashi Safaris lead you on the adventure of your lifetime!
Northern Tanzania Safari Destinations
Serengeti
The main event! Serengeti National Park is arguably the most widely recognized wildlife sanctuary in the world. Its translation to “endless plains” in the Maasai language still remains truthful. The national park covers over 30,000 square km (over 11,500 square miles). Recently proclaimed “The Seventh World Wonder”, the Serengeti is the chief attraction in Africa.
More than 30 species of animals are found within its boundaries and include “the big five” (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, and buffalo). The Great Migration during May or early June moves gigantic herds of wildebeest, gazelle, and zebra across the plains to their annual migratory spot. In their wake close behind follow the predators, the lions, cheetah, and wild dog with vultures overhead. The common species also cohabit here in their respective terrains and include hippo, giraffe, elephant, eland, impala, antelope, baboons, monkeys and over 500 species of birds.
The Serengeti is the hallmark of Africa-and we know you came to witness “the circle of life”! The Serengeti is a nine hour drive from Moshi. If you want
to visit it is best to allow 4 days although 3 days can be done in a pinch.
Ngorongoro Crater
You might hear this famous site referred to as simply “The Crater”, because it is worldly-known for its unique scenery. The Crater has been declared a World Heritage Site and lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area covering more than 8,000 square kilometers. On its boundaries lie Lake Eyasi and the Gold Mountains, and roughly in its center is the Olbalal Swamp and the Olduvai Gorge.
The Crater is the largest unbroken caldera in the world, with naturally steep walls rising 610 meters from the crater floor. It is a natural “amphitheater” and is home to 30,000 animals.
The many species live together despite natural tendencies and despite the order of the food chain. The Crater is a beautiful, miraculous place to
witness cohabitation between animal friend and foe. Gazelle, buffalo, eland, hartebeest, baboons, rhino, warthogs, and thousands of wildebeest
and zebra are scattered across the land. Alongside them sit the kings of the food chain, the predators, including lions, leopards, hyena and cheetah.
More than 100 species of birds not yet discovered in the Serengeti have been spotted here, and a pink sea of flamingos is often an attraction to
the soda lakes. The only noted absence in the crater is the giraffe. Ngorongoro Crater has a high density of animals but the size is such that all can
be seen in half day. No overnights are allowed inside of the crater so all accommodations are outside of the crater. Ngorongoro is a five hour drive from
Moshi so with a very early start that can be experienced even as a day trip although it is very common to pair it with other parks as a multiple-day
safari
Tarangire National Park
A taste of Africa you always thought you’d see! Named after the vital river that flows through it, Tarangire is a natural land home to many plants and wildlife. Ancient baobab trees with sky-high, root-like branches scatter the land and make for a breathtaking skyline-making Tarangire a uniquely African experience and thus a popular spot for visitors. You’ll have plenty of photo opportunities here.
The park features buffalo, zebra, giraffe, gnu, lion, leopard, elephant, waterbuck, oryx, kudu and many many more species. For bird lovers,
the best season to visit Tarangire is between October and May, when migratory species infiltrate the area. Tarangire is 3.5 hours from Moshi so can
easily be visited as a day trip and is often included in the first day of a Serengeti safari to break up the long drive.
Lake Manyara National Park
Another taste of Africa, Lake Manyara is a national park and forest dedicated to the preservation of wildlife. Two famous sights are unique to Manyara include the tree-climbing lions and the tree-climbing pythons. The lions can be spotted lounging across the branches of Acacia trees, often times as high as seven meters off the ground!
The Great Rift Valley is noted for its incredible beauty. All visitors enter the park and drive immediately into the lush rainforest terrain,
home to many families of baboons and blue monkeys. Beyond the rainforest lies many other terrains, including woodlands, grasslands, and swamps,
thus it is home to many other animals. The park is noted for its huge herds of buffalo and elephants. You’ll also have a chance to spot giraffes,
impala, hippo, and a variety of small animals. Bring your camera! Lake Manyara is 3.5 hours from Moshi and can be done as a day trip or as a
part of a longer safari. The park is not very large so one day is sufficient to see all.
Arusha National Park
This small yet spectacular national park is located very close to Moshi and Arusha regions and features many of Tanzania’s various terrains and wildlife. Highlights include Mt. Meru, Ngurdoto crater and the Momela lakes. From 1500 m base camp to Mt. Meru’s summit at 4566 m, Arusha National Park exhibits several vegetation zones including grasslands, pine forests, valleys and rainforests.
The land is alive with natural wildlife including 400 species of resident and migratory birds, including the famous flamingos (seasonal) that spend their leisure time in the awesome Momela Lakes. Resident mammals include hyena, buffalo, klipspringer, gerenuk, black and white colobus monkeys and blue monkey. Snakes, chameleons, alligators, tortoises and turtles are observed up close and personal at the reptile and snake farm.
Walking safaris are available for this trip, and is most ideal for a day’s trip from either Moshi or Arusha.
Sample Itineraries
We have included some of our most commonly requested itineraries. Let these serve as a start for your ideas. We will gladly customize your
itinerary to suit your needs and resources, but you can use these itineraries as a starting point in your planning.
Day 1: After breakfast, we collect you from your hotel and proceed to Tarangire National Park for a game drive.
This park is especially known for the large number of elephants and giraffe. Animals from the surrounding area congregate along the Tarangire
River which winds its way through the park. The park has a large number of baobab trees and is quite scenic. We pause for a box lunch inside
the park, then continue with the game drive. Late afternoon, we travel towards the camp or lodge for dinner and overnight rest. There will be
options whether you spend overnight inside of Tarangire (more expensive and less driving the next day, but more immersion in nature)
or at a private campsite/lodge outside of the park (less expensive but not an "in the wild" experience)
Non game viewing drive hours to Tarangire: 3-4hrs
Meals: picnic lunch and dinner<
Day 2: After breakfast, we drive to Serengeti National Park. This drive takes us through Ngorongoro Conservation Area
(not through the crater but in the highlands). Once we arrive at the Serengeti, we proceed on a game drive until evening. Relaxation,
dinner and overnight will be at campsite/lodge/tented camp. Overnight will be inside Serengeti.
Non Game viewing drive hours: 6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
Day 3: Full day game viewing in the Serengeti. The park is very large but your guide will know the best locations for game viewing
at that time.
In the evening we will go to our evening’s accommodations for relaxation, dinner and overnight rest. Depending on the time of the year,
this night will either be at the same accommodations as the previous night, or at a different location. This will be determined well before
your trip date. Typically in February you will want to be in the Ndutu area. If July - September you will want to travel to the Kogatende
area of the Serengeti.
Activity: full day game viewing
Meals:Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
Day 4: Full day Serengeti. Another opportunity for game viewing. There is an options for a dawn hot air balloon safari (added price). If choosing this option
you should know that the actual air time is approximately 1 hour long. You will need to depart for the site around 4am. Included in the price is a
full picnic breakfast including sparking wine. The experience will be finished around 10am. From then on (or beginning after breakfast if not
choosing the balloon safari) you will have the day to continue game viewing. If your safrai has taken you to Kogatende, we will need to return to
central Serengeti (Seronera) this night.
Activity: full day game viewing
Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner
Day 5: After breakfast, we set out to explore of the Serengeti and view the wildlife while we make our way eventually out of the park
and back into Ngorongoro Conservation Area (but not in the crater this day) where we will have dinner and overnight rest at
campsite/lodge/tented camp. Note: Overnights are not permitted inside of the crater. All accommodations are outside the crater,
most are near the crater rim. This is a cold location since there is some altitude (7,500 ft or 2286m). Even a knit cap and light gloves
may feel welcome since it also tends to be windy.
Non game viewing rive time: 3-4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6: After breakfast, we will descend into Ngorongoro Crater. The concentration of animals inside of the crater is quite high and the size
of the crater is such that in half day, all can be seen. (The crater is just 20km in diameter.) At that time, we ascend out of the crater and make our way to Lake Eyasi for a
cultural tour.
Drive hours: 2-3 hrs Ngorongoro - Lake Eyasi
Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
Day 7: Very early morning (before sunrise) as we join the Hadzabe tribe on a hunt. This tribe is very opportunistic, hunting anything
from mice to giraffe by bow and arrow (poison tipped for the large game). They are also masters at gathering wild honey and foraging for
edible roots. You can compare your archery skills and your ability to create fire without matches. This day will be moderately active. Your clothes
and shoes should be appropriate for moving quickly through the bush. We recommned long trousers and long sleeves to minimize scratches and
good shoes for fast walking. Afterwards we will start our way back
to Arusha/Moshi where the itinerary ends. Accommodations for this night are not included in the price quote.
Non game viewing drive time: 5 hours
Meals: Brunch
Day 1: After breakfast, we pick you up at your hotel and drive to Lake Manyara National Park. It is a lovely park with the shallow soda
lake being a haven for flamingoes. It is a favorite park for bird-watchers with over 300 migratory bird species. The park also is known for its

some small towns and rural areas get a glimpse of ordinary life in Tanzania. Upon arrival at Lake Manyara National Park, we will proceed
on a game drive. The game viewing will continue until mid afternoon, when we will travel into Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) where
we will have dinner and overnight at campsite/lodge/tented camp. Note: Overnights are not permitted inside of the crater. All accommodations
are outside the crater, most are near the crater rim. This is a cold location since there is some altitude (7,500 ft or 2286m). Even a knit

crater at a designated picnic area (near a small lake favoured by hippos) we asend out of the crater and travel
to Tarangire National Park. Some short game viewing inside of Tarangire National Park before settling in at our accommodations inside of the park.
Non game viewing drive time: Ngorongoro - Tarangire 3 hours
Meals: breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner

Safari Accommodations
There is a large variation in overnight accommodations while on safari. From simple sleeping tents to lodges and tented camps costing several
thousand dollars a night. When considering your options, it is best to take into consideration how much time you will have at that location to
enjoy the facilities. If you are arriving after dark already tired and are scheduled to depart again at 6am the next morning, the lodge swimming
pool might not be worth the price. If you are wanting a luxury experience, we can plan an itinerary to let you enjoy the accommodations more.
Many of them are in such prime wildlife areas, that you can get a certain amount of game viewing sitting in front of your room/tent.
There are a large number of accommodation options, and Kahsi Safari can book any of your choosing (based on availability) but we have listed below a group of accommodations that we commonly work with and are confident of their service and value

Basic Camping
For basic camping safaris, the tents are large enough for 2 sleeping bags (or camp cots) plus your gear. The guide and cook will set up the
tent for you. The tents are high enough to stand up in the center, but there is no real room to walk around. You will need to bring a flashlight
(torch) for lighting, insect repellant, shower slippers, and a towel. Toilet and wash facilites will be communal at the campsite.
There are reeally two different types of basic camping experiences. One is camping inside of the safari destinations. No one is allowed to just pitch a tent wherever they like. Only designated campsites can be used. There will be many other groups also camping in the same area. These campsites will have a caged in area for food storage and cooking. Expect just long-drop toilets and cold water showers. Some have solar heated hot water, but the demand is greater than the supply, so there is no guarantee of hot water. There is nothing keeping the animals out of the campsite but as long as you do not have food inside your tent, the animals will not bother you. There are safety precautions that must be heeded if going to the toilet after dark. For each campsite your guide will inform you of the procedure. It is not uncommon to hear animals during the night and occasionally you may see some during the day. There will be a cook and food brought along for your meals. The tents should be kept zipped up except for entering and exiting to keep insects and reptiles out. There will not be separate mosquito nettings, so enter and exit the tents quickly and keep them zipped up. The quality of the meals will be a pleasent surprise. The cook can handle special meals upon reequest (made before the start of the safari). Some people have trouble sleeping if they hear lions mating or other animal noises, but it is a memorable experience well worth the experience. In addition to the park entry fee,the government charges $35/person per night for the use of the campsite. This is already incorporated into the price quote. There are no public campsites at Ndutu portion of Serengeti/Ngorongoro and none at the Kogatende area of Serengeti. These areas are still possible to visit on a camping safari but will require travel to a different area for overnight.
The other type of camping experience is the use of private campsites outside of the safari destinations. We may use these to either reduce your cost for the safari, or in instances where the logistics makes that location the best option. The majority of these are in the town of Mto wa Mbu or Karatu. These towns are located not far from Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara National Park. The gates to enter into Ngorongoro Conservation Area are closed from 6pm until 6am daily. So these campsites are often used after a Tarangire or Lake Manyara safari while in transit to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. These campsites are walled in with the wildlife limited to an occsaional monkey. The facilites are much more comfortable, flushing toilets, hot water showers, food service, bar, and some have a swimming pool. It will feel like backyard camping. This type of camping experience may be what you would like if you need more comfort, have very young children, or are worried about animals at night. The Serengeti is too big to leave the park for overnight, so this option is limited to safaris in Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Arusha National Park, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Safari Lodges
Lodges are just as you would expect, basically a hotel experience, but what a location and view!. Self-contained rooms with a common dining area and lounge area.
Many have swimming pools. Meals at the mid-range lodges will usually be buffet style. Luxury lodges will usually have a menu and meals
prepared to order. Luxury lodges likely will have options for espresso based drinks such as cappuccino. Many will have evening entertainment,
usually cultural dancing and singing. There will be electricity (either solar or generator) at all lodges, internet (maybe not the fastest),
some luxury lodges will offer spa services (extra cost), and some are all inclusive of drinks (premium brands at additional cost).
Lodges are found both inside the safari destinations and just outside. The government charges a $71/person per night concession fee
for staying at a lodge inside a safari destination. This fee will be already be included in your price quote.
Tented Camps
Tented camps are a popular option. Expect room sized tents with full furnature, including bed frames with comfortalbe mattresses.
They will be self contained with hot water showers. Many will have raised wood floors. Luxury tented camps may also have a soaking tub.
There will be electricity. There will be a separate dining and lounge tent. Some have swimming pools. If needing to leave your room,
there will be a system in place for you to be escorted safely to your destination since animals are free to roam the area. The government
charges a concesson fee of either $59 or $71/night per person (depending on which park the tented camp is located). This fee is already included
in your price quote.
Some tented camps in the Serengeti are temporary, moving seasonally to different locations according to the great migration. These typically are in the absolute best game viewing locations. But being seasonal, they don't have the same level of tent luxury but often the food and services are of very good quality.
There are many, many options and you can combine accommodtion catagories in the same safari. In our price quotes we list certain accommodations that through our experience we feel confident of their quality. But we are not limited to those options and at request we can give you a price quote for any option that you desire.
Zanzibar Beach and Cultural Experience
Tanzania is a united republic, the result of a union of Tanganyika (mainland Tanzania) and Zanzibar (an archipelago). Although
Zanzibar consists or several islands, the two main islands are Unguja and Pemba, with Unguja being be far the largest and
most common tourist destination. In fact is it most commonly just referred to as Zanzibar. Unguja is approximately 85 km long (53 miles) and
30 km wide (20 miles). It is located 35 km (22 miles) off mainland Tanzania in the Indian Ocean.
The island has a long history as an international trading center -largely spices, textiles, and slaves. These influences result in the culture being a mix of Persian, Arabic, Indian, African, and European (largely Portugese) influences. This is the birthplace of the Swahili language and its exotic culture.
Zanzibar is known to have some of the finest beaches on earth, excellent SCUBA and snorkeling locations, and great deep sea fishing. Certain locations have a great number of dolphins and offer the experience to swim with them in the ocean. There are no dangerous sharks in this area of the Indian Ocean.
Getting There
There is an international airport located on the southwest portion of Unguja - Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ airport code). There is
also a small airport on Pemba Island (PMA airport code -- be careful if booking a flight, there is also a Pemba Airport in Mozambique). Flights
to ZNZ flights can be found from Kilimanjaro International Airport, Dar es Salaam (DAR) Moshi Airport (QSI), Arusha Airport (ARK),
from Serengeti (Seronera) Airstrip (SEU). There is also ferry service from Dar es Salaam to Ugunja (Zanzibar). To get to Pemba, you can get a flight
on a small plane from ZNZ or DAR. There is also a ferry from Ugunja to Pemba.
Activities in Zanzibar
Who says that you need to do anything? After a Kilimanjaro trek or being bounced around on dusty roads on safari, doing nothing for a few days is

Destinations in Zanzibar
Stone Town
The heart of Zanzibar, Stone Town, was constructed during the 19th century: a labyrinth of narrow alleys complete with palaces,
mosques, and tiny shops. It's noisy, busy and not very clean – but it has a vibrant, exotic atmosphere that can be enticing! Stay
here for a night or two – it's often convenient for international flights – at one of the beautiful converted merchant's houses,
and look forward to eating out.
Northern Zanzibar
Two or three hours drive from Stone Town, the villages of Nungwi and Kendwa marks the northern-most tip of Zanzibar. The turquoise-blue ocean surrounds
it on three sides; Nungwi has long been a magnet for visitors seeking paradise. Come for some good diving and beaches, and proximity to a
lively village where there's always a lot going on. Very little tide variation here is a big plus. The full moon party at Kendwa Rocks Hotel draws
huge crowds.
East Coast Zanzibar
The northern part of east coast Zanzibar is lined with long, powder-white beaches.
Offshore you're find the magical Mnemba Island – the ultimate island lodge for
those who can afford it.
Michamvi Peninsula and Southeast Zanzibar
South along the east coast of Zanzibar and the beach remains stunning: powder-white sand with a barrier reef, lots of palm trees and a
significant tidal range. The villages become a little sleepier and more relaxed as you head south, and Jambiani, in particular, is
very relaxed indeed. For an authentic visit to a friendly village, you can't beat it.
Southwest Zanzibar
Fumba Peninsula is south of Stone Town. Like the south-east of Zanzibar, this is a very relaxed and friendly corner of the island which
has seen few visitors. Kizimkazi is known for its swimming with dolphins tours. Very large tidal variation in this portion of the island, you can
experience no beach to 100m of beach during the same day..
Offshore is the award-winning eco-resort on Chumbe Island.
Pemba Island
Pemba is a 30-minute flight northeast of Zanzibar. Though comparable in size, its economy is largely rural and agricultural. It's
almost exclusively Muslim, with a people who are more traditional in their occupations, and more conservative in their approach. The shoreline
has more mangrove forests, but the beaches it does have are wonderful. If you are in search of solitude this is a great fit. There are good
snorkel/SCUBA opportunities here also.
Day Trips from Moshi/Arusha
Safari Day Trips
Arusha National Park & Meserani Snake Park
This small yet spectacular national park is located very close to Moshi and Arusha Surprisingly in spite of its close proximity to these two
tourist centers, the park is not heavily visited. The park has various terrains and wild life. Highlights include Mt. Meru, Ngurdoto crater and the
Momela lakes. From 1500 m base camp to Mt. Meru’s summit at 4566 m, Arusha National Park exhibits several vegetation zones including grasslands,
pine forests, valleys and rainforests.
The land is alive with natural wildlife including 400 species of resident and migratory birds, including the famous flamingos (seasonal) that spend
their leisure time in the awesome Momela Lakes. Resident mammals include hyena, buffalo, klipspringer, gerenuk, black and white colobus monkeys
, and blue monkey. In addition to traditional safaris in a 4x4, walking and canoe safaris are available for this trip. AT Meserani Sanke Park,
snakes, chameleons, crocodiles, tortoises, and turtles are observed up close. Being only an hour's drive from Moshi and even less from Arusha, this
is a convenient choice for an animal viewing day trip.
Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara is a national park and forest dedicated to the preservation of wildlife. Two famous sights unique to Manyara include the tree-climbing lions and the tree-climbing pythons. The lions can be spotted lounging across the branches of Acacia trees, oftentimes as high as seven meters off the ground!
The park is noted for its huge herds of buffalo and elephant. You’ll also have a chance to spot giraffes,
impala, hippos, and a variety of small animals. Bring your camera! 2/3 of the park is covered by Lake Manyara but you can experience that portion as
well with a canoe safari. Lake Manyara is approximately a 3.5 hours drive from Moshi (2 hours from Arusha).
Coffee Tour/Waterfalls Hike
For this trip, there will be some hiking on some steep slopes and the possibility of a swim. Bring good shoes that are not slippery and won't be harmed by getting
wet. You will want sun protection and because there is some elevation and you will be in a rain forest,
you might want a layer of clothes in case of cooler temperature and rain, with a swimsuit under your clothes and a towel brought along. We will pick
you up at your hotel and drive up the mountain through some scenic small villages. You will then be given a tour of a small banana and coffee
farm, learning about the cultivation and importance of coffee in the area. You will then participate in the roasting, grinding, and brewing
of the coffee. There will be a hike to a nearby waterfall. If you don't mind the temperature of the glacier meltwater, you can go for a swim.
The local women will prepare a lunch consisting of traditional Chagga tribe dishes (these can be adapted to special menu requests). We then return
you to your hotel.
Maji Moto (Hot Spring)
Maji Moto means hot water in Swahili (Maji = Water, Moto = Hot). A drive through some small villages brings you to this area.
The beautiful hot spring is nestled into the forest, and features naturally warm water heated from the earth, ancient tree roots and diving
caves. Great for relieving tired muscles after conquering Kilimanjaro, but you don't really need an excuse to relax and enjoy.
You can refresh yourself in the water and it is safe to swim (don't mind the small fishes nibbling at dry skin cells, they are harmless).
Lunch will be brought for you to enjoy before we return you back to your hotel.
